Japan Foundation Japanese Studies Fellowship 2027 – Funded Research in Japan (Humanities & Social Sciences)

The Japan Foundation funds scholars to research in Japan: doctoral candidates for 4–12 months to finish their dissertations, and researchers for 21–89 days or 4–12 months. Fellows must arrive between 20 June 2027 and 20 March 2028. Apply online through the Japan Foundation's application portal.

Who can apply

Only for: PhD candidates and researchers (PhD or equivalent) in the humanities or social sciences working on Japan. Only for: PhD candidates and researchers in the humanities or social sciences whose work is about Japan. You must be a citizen or permanent resident of, and live in, a country with diplomatic relations with Japan, and be proficient in Japanese or English. Not for natural sciences, medicine, engineering, undergraduates or master's students. Applicants based at Southeast Asian institutions apply to the JF-JSA-ASEAN programme instead; US applicants follow the Japan Foundation New York process.
