Canada visa rules: Express Entry (permanent residence) and Work permit with an employer LMIA
What the government of Canada actually requires, in plain language, with links to the official pages. We are not an agency and can't get you a visa.
Route 1: Express Entry (permanent residence)
Processing time: ~6 months after invitation
- Points-based: language test (IELTS/CELPIP or TEF/TCF), education assessment (ECA) and work experience
- Job offers no longer add points (since March 2025)
- Most invitations now go to groups: French speakers, healthcare, trades and people already working in Canada
- Study and temporary work permits are sharply reduced in 2026, and Express Entry reforms are under consultation
Route 2: Work permit with an employer LMIA
Processing time: Varies
- Trades, agri-food, caregiving and other shortage roles
- Your employer applies for the LMIA, not you
- Temporary work permit, not permanent residence
- Nobody can sell you an LMIA. Buying one is fraud and it cancels your application
